How To Use Pinterest to Strengthen Your Online Marketing Campaign

As of January 21st, 2015, Pinterest had more than 70 million users, making it one of the most popular social media websites on the Internet. This is not a surprise as visual marketing is the next big thing in online marketing.

Pinterest allows its users to Pin almost anything – pictures, quotes, gifts, recipes; the list is nearly endless. Many businesses have adopted Pinterest because of its ability to push targeted engagement. If you want to use Pinterest in your online marketing campaign, but don’t know how to get started, here are a few tips.

Gain more followers on Pinterest

You can gain more followers on Pinterest only by optimizing your website, images and profile for exposure. The first thing you should do, is verify your Pinterest account. A verified account confirms that the account is real and not just a knockoff. Next, make use of rich pins instead of regular pins. Rich pins add more detail to the image by providing a clear title and ensuring that the product description does not change or get removed. Then, you should make your website or blog Pinterest friendly, so that users can follow you on Pinterest and repin your images, Use the Follow and Pin It widgets to do this. So when users like something they find on your website, they will use these widgets to keep in touch with you and find more such content.

Use the ‘Pin it’ button

The Pin it widget makes it easy for people to collect images from your site. If someone likes an image posted on your website, they can use the widget to put it on their boards. If someone likes the image on the board and wants to see more images like it, they will click on the image and the system will send them to your website. Here is an example of the advantages of the Pin it widget builder.

allrecipes.com embedded the Pin It widget on their website and in just three months, people shared more than 50,000 recipes from Allrecipes.com on Pinterest, earning the website 139 million impressions.

online marketing with pinterest

Here is another example involving a retail company, Nordstrom. Pinterest is such an integral part of Nordstrom’s online marketing strategy that they also use it for in-store promotions. The company identifies its most popular pins on Pinterest and then showcases them in the stores. The company has more than 4.4 million followers on Pinterest and there is no doubt that many of them are also in-store shoppers. When these users see the popular pins in the store, they buy the items. The company has also gone a step further and developed an app to help salespersons find pinned products in the store.

Update pins regularly

After creating some boards on Pinterest, update them regularly with new pictures of your displays, products or services. Pinterest also allows you to pin videos (the video navigation link on the top of the page).

If you don’t have enough images, don’t worry. You can find good ones on the Internet. Many online businesses also pin content from other social networking sites on Pinterest and from Pinterest to those sites. This way, you can showcase your offerings across all the social media sites you use.

Repin on Pinterest

A large percentage of the pins on Pinterest are repins. There are many beautiful images on Pinterest and people naturally want to share this information. Pinterest also recommends that rather than showing off your products, you should try and showcase the ideas, places and people that inspired them. This can be accomplished through repinning.

Repinning has many advantages. For instance, when you repin content which you think will be of use to your customers, your account becomes a source of valuable information in your niche. When you repin images from someone else’s board, an email is also sent out to the owner of that account, building awareness for your brand or business. They might return the favour by repinning content from your board to their accounts, where more people will see it.

Other aspects of using Pinterest in an online marketing campaign are making user generated boards, completing your Pinterest profile, using Pinterest stats in market research, interacting with followers and many more. If you do these things, Pinterest will become a valuable tool in your arsenal of online marketing tools.
